GETTING STARTED

A hair system - also known as a hairpiece, toupee, or non-surgical hair replacement system - is a hair unit made from human hair ventilated onto a base material, which is then attached to the scalp using medical-grade adhesive or tape. Unlike a wig, a hair system is designed to cover only the area of hair loss, blending seamlessly with your existing natural hair for a completely undetectable result.

If you're experiencing male pattern baldness, thinning hair, or a receding hairline and want an immediate, non-invasive solution, a hair system is worth serious consideration. There are no surgical procedures, no recovery time, and no ongoing medication. Most men who try a quality hair system wonder why they waited so long.

The right system depends on your lifestyle, how naturally undetectable you want it to look, and how much maintenance you're willing to do. As a general rule, lace systems offer the most natural appearance but require a little more care, while thin skin systems are more durable and easier to maintain. If you're unsure where to start, Swiss lace is a popular first for its undetectable hairline, while thin skin suits men who want low-maintenance convenience.

A stock system is a ready-made hair system available for immediate dispatch - it comes in standard sizes, colors and densities. A custom system is made to your exact specifications including head measurements, hair color, density and base design. At SHS, all our systems are stock units, though we offer a Cut To Size service to achieve a tailored fit, and a Perming service if you require more curl.

Yes - when the right system is chosen and correctly attached, a modern hair system is virtually impossible to detect, even at close range. The key factors are choosing the right base material, matching your hair color accurately, and blending the system with your natural hair. Thousands of men wear hair systems every day without anyone knowing.

It's one of the most common fears for new wearers - and almost universally, it fades quickly. Most experienced wearers report that not a single person notices unless they tell them. A good system, well maintained, is genuinely undetectable.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT SYSTEM

The four main base types are lace, thin skin (poly/PU), monofilament (mono), and hybrid systems that combine two materials. Lace is the most natural-looking and breathable. Thin skin is the most durable and easiest to attach. Mono is very durable but less natural at the hairline. Hybrid systems combine the benefits of two materials — typically a lace front for a natural hairline with a skin or poly perimeter for a secure bond.

Swiss lace is finer, softer and more transparent - making it the most undetectable option available. French lace is slightly thicker and more durable, making it a better choice for men with an active lifestyle who still want a natural-looking result. Both offer excellent hairlines. Swiss lace suits men who prioritise realism above all else; French lace suits those who want to balance realism with durability.

Thin skin systems use a transparent polyurethane base that bonds directly to the scalp, creating a very natural-looking result with no visible knots. They are easier to attach and clean than lace systems, making them popular with beginners. They are available in a range of thicknesses - the thinner the base, the more natural the appearance but the shorter the lifespan.

Hair density should closely match your natural hair to look realistic. Most men opt for light to medium density. Very high density can look unnatural, particularly around the hairline, and tends to look less realistic as men age. If in doubt, go slightly lighter - it's more natural and easier to blend with your existing hair on the sides and back.

We offer a color ring for precise color matching, which is available to purchase in our store. Each of our product pages also features a color swatch to help guide your selection online. If you'd prefer a more personal approach, simply send us a sample of your natural hair and we'll help you find the closest match.

For the vast majority of men, human hair is the better choice. It looks, feels and behaves like real hair - you can wash it, style it and heat it just as you would your own hair. Synthetic hair is more affordable but has significant limitations in styling, cannot be heat styled, and generally looks less natural over time.

At SHS, all our systems use 100% human hair with one exception - systems featuring a grey percentage use synthetic grey hair blended with human hair as standard. This is common practice across the industry as synthetic grey more accurately replicates the natural appearance of grey hair. However, if you prefer a fully human hair system including the grey, this option is available - just contact us before ordering and we'll be happy to arrange it for you.

Most stock systems come in standard sizes that cover the most common areas of hair loss. If you're unsure, our Cut To Size service allows us to resize any stock unit to achieve a precise fit for your specific pattern of hair loss.

ATTACHMENT & APPLICATION

The two most common attachment methods are tape and liquid adhesive (bond). Tape is double-sided and applied around the perimeter of the base - it's easy to use, beginner-friendly and provides a strong hold. Liquid adhesive is applied directly to the scalp for a full bond hold, and tends to last longer. Many experienced wearers use a combination of both - tape around the edges and adhesive at the front hairline.

Tape is generally recommended for beginners. It's easier to apply, easier to remove, and more forgiving if you make a mistake during application. Once you're comfortable with the process, you can experiment with adhesive for a stronger or longer-lasting bond.

Clean your scalp thoroughly to remove all oils, residue and old adhesive before each application. A clean, oil-free scalp gives the best bond. If you have sensitive skin, consider using a scalp protector before applying adhesive.

Align the front of the system with your natural hairline first, then gently press or roll it back into place. Positioning aids are available to help with alignment and make the process easier, particularly for beginners. Take your time - once the adhesive sets it's much harder to adjust. Please see our resources section for more information on fitting.

This varies depending on your attachment method, lifestyle and scalp type. Generally, tape provides a hold of 1–2 weeks and liquid adhesive can last 2–4 weeks. Men with oilier scalps, or those who sweat heavily through exercise, may find the bond loosens faster. Humidity and warm climates can also affect bond duration.

Absolutely - and this is one of the biggest advantages of ordering direct from SHS. Self-maintenance at home is entirely achievable with the right system and a little practice. There's a learning curve at first but most men are completely confident within their first two or three applications. Our resources section and the wider online hair system community are excellent sources of tutorial guidance.

It depends on the system and your preference. Full adhesive bonding generally works best on a clean-shaved area, which provides the strongest hold and most natural appearance. However, some attachment methods work on very short hair, and partial systems can be attached with clips to existing hair without shaving.

CARE & MAINTENANCE

Most wearers clean their system every 1–2 weeks, though this varies depending on your lifestyle and activity level. Men who sweat heavily or live in hot climates may need to clean more frequently. Regular cleaning extends the lifespan of your system significantly.

Gently rinse with lukewarm water. Apply a small amount of sulfate-free shampoo and carefully massage through the hair - avoid scrubbing. Rinse thoroughly, apply conditioner, rinse again, and pat dry gently with a towel. Air drying is preferable to blow drying where possible.

Always use a mild, sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner. Regular shampoos contain sulfates that strip moisture from the hair and can degrade the base material over time - particularly lace bases. Products specifically designed for hair systems are the best choice.

Use a dedicated adhesive remover solvent specifically designed for hair systems. Apply it to the edges and allow it to break down the adhesive before gently lifting. Never pull or tear the base as this can damage delicate materials, particularly lace. For detailed guidance on removing residue from lace systems, please visit our resources section.

Yes, but choose products that are alcohol-free. Alcohol-based products dry out the hair and can cause premature shedding. Water-based products are the safest option. Heat styling tools can be used on human hair systems - always use a heat protectant spray and avoid excessive temperatures.

Yes, but use a low heat setting and keep the dryer at least six inches from the hair. Air drying is gentler and will extend the lifespan of your system, but blow drying on a low setting is perfectly fine when needed.

Yes. Most wearers sleep in their system. Using a silk or satin pillowcase reduces friction and helps the hair stay in better condition overnight.

Store on a plastic wig head or template mould in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Avoid folding or compressing the base as this can cause creasing or distortion.

UV exposure causes human hair to become dry and discolored over time, as the hair lacks the natural oils of growing hair. Wearing a hat in strong sun is the simplest protection. UV-protectant sprays designed for hair systems are also worth using during summer months or in sunny climates.

A small amount of hair shedding is normal, particularly in the early life of a new system. Excessive shedding - noticeably thinning areas or large amounts of hair coming out during washing may indicate the system needs replacing or that care products are too harsh.

LIFESPAN & DURABILITY

Lifespan varies significantly depending on the base material and how well the system is maintained. As a general guide, ultra-thin skin (0.03mm) and Swiss lace systems typically last 1–2 months. French lace and super thin skin (0.06–0.08mm) systems last 2–4 months. Thicker skin and mono systems can last 4–6 months or longer with good care. The more natural the system looks, the shorter the lifespan - this is an inherent trade-off in hair system design.

Signs that a system needs replacing include noticeable thinning of the hair, significant color fading, fraying or damage to the base, or a hairline that no longer looks natural. Don't wait until the system is visibly worn - replacing it before it deteriorates helps ensure you always look your best.

Many experienced wearers keep two systems in rotation. This extends the lifespan of both systems by giving each one time to rest between wears, and means you always have a clean, fresh system ready. It also provides a backup if one becomes damaged.

Yes significantly. Thicker base materials are more durable but less natural. Thinner bases look more realistic but have a shorter lifespan and require more careful handling. Hybrid systems that combine lace with a skin perimeter offer a good balance between appearance and durability.

LIFESTYLE

Yes. Many hair system wearers lead highly active lifestyles including running, gym training, cycling and contact sports. A skin base or hybrid system with a full skin perimeter provides the most secure hold for physical activity. Heavy sweating can weaken the bond over time, so you may need to reattach more frequently if you train regularly.

Yes, though prolonged exposure to chlorine or saltwater can dry out the hair and weaken the bond over time. If you swim regularly, consider using a waterproof adhesive, rinse the hair thoroughly after swimming, and use a deep conditioning treatment to replenish moisture. A thin skin or hybrid system tends to hold up better in water than a full lace system.

Yes, but wait at least 24 hours after a fresh application before getting the hair system wet. This allows the adhesive to fully cure and ensures a strong, lasting bond. After that initial period, showering with the system on is fine.

No, when properly maintained, a hair system will not damage your natural hair or scalp. Your natural hair will continue to grow as normal underneath the system. It's important to remove the system regularly, keep the scalp clean, and allow it to breathe. If you experience persistent irritation, consult a dermatologist.

Yes it's perfectly fine to use a sauna - However, high heat and steam can weaken adhesive bonds, so it's worth being aware of this before using a sauna or steam room. If you do use them regularly, a stronger adhesive or tape designed for high-heat environments will provide a better hold.

A properly attached hair system should remain completely secure in windy conditions.

CONFIDENCE & SOCIAL SITUATIONS

With a quality system, correctly attached and well maintained, the answer is almost certainly no. Modern hair systems are designed to be completely undetectable. The vast majority of wearers report that friends, family and colleagues have no idea unless they're told directly.

This is an entirely personal decision. Many long-term wearers choose to disclose to partners once a relationship becomes serious. Our hair system community's general consensus is that most partners react with understanding and support. It's worth remembering that wearing a hair system is a personal grooming choice - no different in principle to any other cosmetic enhancement.

A properly attached hair system is designed to withstand normal touching, including a partner running their fingers through your hair.

Completely normal - almost every first-time wearer feels the same way. The anxiety almost universally fades within the first few days of wearing. Most men describe the experience as transformative, and many say they wish they hadn't waited as long as they did.

SAFETY & ALLERGIES

Yes, though it's always worth performing a patch test before using any new adhesive or tape product. If you have known skin sensitivities, let us know and we can advise on the most suitable base materials and attachment options. Hypoallergenic adhesive options are available.

If you experience a reaction, remove the system immediately and cleanse the area thoroughly. Consult a healthcare professional if the reaction is severe or persistent. Hypoallergenic adhesives are widely available and are a good option for anyone with sensitive skin.

Not when worn and maintained correctly. Keeping the scalp clean, removing the system regularly to let the skin breathe, and using gentle, appropriate products will keep your scalp healthy. Poor maintenance - particularly leaving residue on the scalp for extended periods is the most common cause of scalp irritation.

Yes. Hair systems are used by men and women experiencing all types of hair loss including male pattern baldness, alopecia, and hair loss resulting from medical treatment. If you have a specific medical condition we'd recommend consulting your doctor before starting, particularly regarding any skin sensitivities that may affect adhesive use.
